About Gardril

Putting integrity back into safety training.

Training only matters if the assessment proves what you know and the method proves you are the one who took it.

Why I started Gardril

I’m Tom McWilliams and I spent more than two decades in safety, regulatory and compliance work. During those years I watched the training certificate quietly lose its meaning. Credentials get bought. Safety training certificates get forged. Courses get completed by somebody who is not the person named on the record. Across a number of industries that has led to police investigations, to prosecutions, and in the worst cases to a worker being hurt after their supervisor took the training for them.

None of this is a secret. Employers may have suspected the certificate in the file might not be true. Workers know a course can be clicked through by anyone with the link. Regulators have started asking harder questions. What nobody had was a practical way to prove who really did the work. Most people wanted training with integrity online, but the methods proved elusive.

A safety certificate should mean one thing. This person, this training, for real.

What went wrong when training moved online

Safety training used to happen in a classroom. The instructor checked identification at the door, saw who was paying attention, and decided who earned credit. If you slept through it or tried to cheat you did not pass, and you had the uncomfortable job of explaining that to your supervisor. Integrity was not a feature of the system. It was the system.

Moving online was the right thing to do. It put good training within reach of workers everywhere, at any hour, without a two hour drive to a classroom. Two things went wrong on the way. The price didn’t meaningfully come down, even as delivery got cheaper every year. And the proof disappeared, because once the instructor was gone nobody could say for certain who was on the other side of the screen.

Artificial intelligence finished the job. A course can now be completed by software, in batches, hundreds at a time, and the certificates that come out look exactly like the real ones. That is not training. It is a record waiting to fail, on the day an incident, an insurer or a regulator asks a question nobody can answer.

Knowledge is free now. Proof is not.

Here is the part our industry does not like to say out loud. Knowledge has stopped being scarce. The information inside most safety courses is published, public and free. The internet made it free and artificial intelligence made it instant. Charging hundreds of dollars for content that is neither proprietary nor hard to find is a business model with nothing underneath it.

So our competitive advantage is not charging and repackaging already free knowledge. We charge for the two things that are genuinely hard and genuinely valuable. Proving that a specific, verified human sat the assessment. And holding that credential somewhere it can be checked in seconds by anyone who needs to, for as long as it matters. The content costs very little. The proof is the product.

Anyone can sell you a course. Almost nobody can prove who took it.

Respect for what people already know

Most online training treats a worker with twenty years on the job exactly like a first day hire. We do not. Experience earned on a rig, in a kitchen, behind the wheel or on a shop floor is real learning, and it’s a better way to learn than sitting in front of a computer.

That is why Gardril is assessment first. You take the knowledge assessment at the start. Know the material? Demonstrate it and you are finished, with an ID verified certificate in hand. Gaps? You train on the gaps and then reassess. For a worker that is respect for their time and their expertise. For an employer it is a crew trained faster and at lower cost, with nothing skipped and every result verified.

A large company can absorb the cost of traditional training. A five person crew cannot. Verified, defensible training should be within reach of both.

What a Gardril certificate means

Every learner verifies their identity with an ID check before the assessment begins, and AI bots are blocked from sitting the exam. When the assessment is passed, the ID-verified credential is issued to that verified person and stored in a credential vault, where an employer, an auditor or an insurer can confirm it in seconds.

We built Gardril to meet the ANSI/ASSP Z490.1-2024 standards, “Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health and Environmental Training”, in both spirit and delivered intent. Did your LMS do the same? If not, why? And why are you using them if they didn’t?

Your identity and your data, with you in the driver’s seat

We ask you to verify your identity because it’s the only honest way to know who completed the training, which is exactly what protects both you and your employer. We hold that data to a high standard of privacy, we use it for verification and nothing else, and we set out precisely how in our Privacy Policy.

Gardril is built to give employers easy access while giving you personal control over your own training data. Portability through our credential vault sets us apart and removes the need for employers to manage your training certificates. No more email requests to HR when you need your records for a new job or a new employer.
